MODULE - 4 BEGINNERS
Describing things ( animals, birds, plants)
Objectives of the module:
By the end of the module, the learner will learn how to
  • describe living things in English.
  • describe the things by using simple sentences

Content of the module :
Describing is defined as giving details about a person, thing or event. Descriptive words are help visualize, describe, define, or explain information about people, places, things, situations, or actions. Most people think of adjectives, words that describe nouns when they think of descriptive words, but many descriptive words are not adjectives.
Descriptive words could also include adverbs or words that help to describe the action. Descriptive words could also be clear, strong verbs or nouns that carry clear meaning. The purpose of descriptive words is to clarify a topic.
Common sentences for describing animals :
Here we are going to see about common describing sentences for animals.

This is a/an ________
It is a wild/ domestic animal.
It is a strong/powerful/tall/short animal.
It lives in a forest/home.
It is _____ in colour.
It can walk/swim/run/jump.
It can’t sing/talk.
Mostly it is found in the village/forest.

For example :
Describing a tiger

  2. It is a national animal of our country.
  3. It is a wild animal.
  4. It has a strong body.
  5. It lives in forest/jungle.
  6. Tiger is yellowish in colour with black stripes on its body.
  7. It is an omnivore.
  8. It can swim in water.
  9. The young one of the tiger is called a cub.
  10. Tigers are found mainly in countries like India, Bhutan, China, Korea and Russia.

For example 
Describing a parrot :

  3. It is green in colour.
  4. It is a very beautiful and intelligent bird.
  5. It has green feathers, a red beak and two legs.
  6. It has a black ring around its neck.
  7. It eats nuts, fruits, buds etc..
  8. It also eats small insects,
  9. Some species parrots are excellent talkers.
  10. There are more than 350 species of different sizes and colour all around the world.

Common sentences for describing a plant:

  1. This is a ------------ plant.
  2. It is a trunk/herb/shrub/climber/creeper/seasonal plant.
  3. Usually the leaves of the plants are flat.
  4. It has branches/leaves/roots/trunk/flowers/fruits.
  5. It needs water to grow. 
  6. Plants prepare their food on their own by using sunlight and water.
  7. Mostly they shade their in Autumn 
  8. It is our best friend.
  9. It gives us shadow/wood/fuel/furniture/pure air/rain.

For example 
Describing a brinjal plant:

                                    

  1. This is a brinjal plant.
  2. It is a herb.
  3. It gives brinjal vegetable.
  4. It is rich in vitamin B6 and fiber.
  5. The color of brinjal vegetable is purple and green.
  6. It is good for health.
  7. Brinjal curry is very tasty.
  8. Eating brinjal can limit brain illness.
  9. Brinjal is mostly grown in India and Sri Lanka.
  10. In many parts of the world it is also known as eggplant.
  11. It is commonly grown everywhere.

Using this picture clue write five sentences about giraffe.


Activity 2:

Take any living things ( any pet animal, plant, bird) in your house.
Show it to us and describe the object using at least 5 sentences.
