DESCRIBING PEOPLE & EVENTS

(APPEARANCE, PROFESSIONS, DESCRIBING EVENTS)

OBJECTIVES OF THE MODULE:

In this module, you will learn - 

•  to describe people on their look and appearance 
•  to describe the professions
• to describe the events (festivals)
• to listen and write/ talk descriptions of people.

CONTENT:

We usually describe people based on their appearance, character, feeling, profession etc.,
This will help us to describe ourselves as well as describing others.

DESCRIBING PEOPLE’S APPEARANCE:

Describing a person is very useful in many situations in our day-to-day life. 

We can describe people through

PHYSICAL APPEARANCES: (What does he/she look like?)

1. Height and weight
2. Age
3. Colour of the hair and eyes
4. Tone of the skin.

To describe someone’s appearance, we use adjectives. An Adjective is a kind of word that

describes a noun. 

Let us see some common words and phrases which describe the appearance of people. 

Height	Tall/tallish Short/shortish Medium height.
Weight (build)	Thin/lean/ skinny/ slender Plump/obese / fat / heavy Medium built, Curvy Well build / muscular
Age	Infant, Child, teenage/adult, middle-aged,  Old /  senior citizen,
Hair	Short, long, curly, wavy,  blonde, bald, straight, spike (Hairstyles - braids, ponytail, pigtails, loose hair)
Eyes	Dark, black, brown. Green, blue
Skin/ Complexion	Fair, dark, white, pale (freckles, pimples, mole, dimples, wrinkles)
General appearance	Handsome, beautiful, ugly, strong

PERSONALITY CHARACTERISTICS: (What is he/ she like?)

Character and Behaviour.

Some of the words which describe personality are given below. 

Brave	Someone who is not afraid of danger
Chatty	Someone who talks a lot
Friendly	Someone who is nice to other people
Cowardly	Someone who is afraid of other things
Clever	Someone who is good at learning things
grumpy	Someone who is bad-tempered
Honest	Someone who is truthful
Lazy	Inactive person
Polite	Someone who has good manners

DESCRIBING PEOPLE - PROFESSIONS:

Some times we have to describe other people by their professions also. Let us see that. 

Occupation is an activity undertaken by the person to earn his livelihood.
It can be business, profession or employment that a person undertakes to make money

Profession is an activity that requires specialized training, knowledge, qualification and
skills. It implies membership of a professional body and certificate of practice.

It can be said that the occupation is a broader term, and it includes profession.

DESCRIBING THE EVENTS:

A descriptive composition about a festival, an event or a celebration should consist of: 
An introduction in which you give the name, time, place and reasons for celebrating.  

The main body in which you describe the preparations and the actual event in separate
paragraphs.

A conclusion which includes people’s feelings, comments or final thoughts about an event.

Note: 

Use present tenses to describe annual festivals 

Use past tenses to describe a festival you attended at some time in the past.  

ACTIVITIES:

ACTIVITY -  1  :

Write three sentences to describe each of these people, giving information about their hair
and face, their height and build and general appearance.

ACTIVITY- 3 :

With the help of the explanation, find out the name of the profession.

1. They make bread and cakes
2. They save lives where people swim (at a beach or swimming pool)
3. They work with flowers.
4. They can fix the problems you have with your teeth.
5. They prepare food for others

ACTIVITY - 4 :

Select any of your favourite festival or celebration event and record your voice with your
mobile and post it in the Whatsapp group.
