GREETINGS & RESPONSES
OBJECTIVES:
In this module, you will:
- learn about the greetings and their responses.
- Know about formal and informal greetings.
- Attempt activities based on greetings in their environment.
CONTENT:
“First Impression is the best impression”
The initial step in starting a conversation is your greeting. It may be either in face to face meet or telephone conversation. This will be the first impression a new person will have about you when you speak with them. So it is very important to use the appropriate greetings for different situations. The other important thing is how you respond to the greetings of others.
There are two types of greetings.
- The formal is more polite and also if you don't know the person.
- The Informal is used when talking to friends / known people.
FORMAL GREETINGS:
Use the following salutations to start a formal conversation in any of these situations.
Good Morning / Good Afternoon / Good Evening
These formal ways of greeting people are used at different times of the day.
The greetings depending on the time of the day.
- “Good morning” is generally used from 5:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
- “Good afternoon” is appropriate for a period from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- “Good evening” is often used after 6 p.m. or when the sun goes down.
- “Goodnight” is not a salutation. Informal communication, it is used to say goodbye.
Nice to meet you / Pleased to meet you
Hello. How do you do?
- This is used when meeting someone for the first time and is very formal.
- This is not really a “How are you?” question.
- It is really a simple greeting and has a similar meaning to “Nice to meet you”.
How have you been?
- This is a polite way to ask “How are you?” when you have not seen a person for a long time.
- Ask this question only if you have met someone before.
B: I’ve been busy working a lot. How about you?
INFORMAL GREETINGS:
Hello / Hi / Hey
“Hello” and “Hi” are the most popular greetings for informal situations.
Hello, Dhilip. How are you?
Hi, Vijay. Nice to see you!
Hi, Vijay. Nice to see you!
How are you doing? / How’s it going?
This is a casual way of asking “How are you?”
A: Hello, Selvi! How are you doing?
B: Fine, thanks.
B: Fine, thanks.
RESPONSES:
When you reply to someone in conversation is known to be a response.
GREETINGS ON SPECIAL OCCASIONS:
We can use special greetings on certain occasions like festivals, birthday, anniversary etc
