ADJECTIVES

OBJECTIVES OF THE MODULE:

In this module, you will learn - 

  • about adjectives
  •  types of adjectives
  • to use adjectives in sentences
CONTENT:  What is Adjective ?

       An adjective describes or modifies noun/s and pronoun/s in a sentence. It normally indicates quality, size, shape, duration, feelings, contents, and more about a noun or pronoun



Example::
  • The team has a dangerous batsman. (What kind?)
  • I have ten candies in my pocket. (How many?)
  • I loved that red car. (Which one?)
  • I earn more money than he does. (How much?)

Descriptive Adjectives:
     
         A descriptive adjective is a word which describes nouns and pronouns. Most of the adjectives belong in this type.
Example :
  • The hungry cats are crying.
  • I saw a flying Eagle

Quantitative Adjectives:

A quantitative adjective provides information about the quantity of the nouns/pronouns

Example :
  • They have three children
Proper Adjectives:
Proper adjectives are the adjective form of proper Noun.
Example :
  • Indians are hard-working. 
  •  Iron is very strong:

Demonstrative adjectives:.

 (This that these those)
Example :


  • This car is mine.
  • That building is so huge
  • These cats are cute.
  • Those flowers are heavenly.
Possessive adjectives: 

possessive adjectives are my, his, her, our, their, your. 

Example :
  • This is my pen
  • Its her bag
Interrogative adjectives: 

which what, whose.
Example :
  • Which phone do you use?
  • What game do you want to play?
  • Whose car is this?
Indefinite adjectives::
The common indefinite adjectives are few, many, much, most, all, any, each, every, either, nobody, several,
Examples:
  • I gave some candy to her.
  • I want a few moments alone.
  • Several writers wrote about the recent incidents.
  • Each student will have to submit homework tomorrow
Articles:
Articles also modify the nouns. So, articles are also adjectives. Articles determine the specification of Noun.
  • A cat is always afraid of water
  • The cat is afraid of me.
Grammatical functions of adjectives: Degrees of comparison: 
  • Sachin is the best player.
  • Sachin is better than any other player
  • No other player is so good as Sachin.
  • Sachin is one of the best players                       
  • Sachin is better than many other players
  • Very few players are as good as Sachin.
  • Dravid is as good as Sachin
  • Sachin is not better than Dravid 
  • Dinesh is not so good as Sachin.
  • Sachin is better than Dinesh .
